Season 4, Bonus Short: Making Magic in the Kitchen (Small Plate)
Conner:
Welcome to Kiddos in the Kitchen, a podcast hosted by my mom.
Stephanie:
Projects that blend food and science are great ways to engage kids and they don't have to be complicated to spark curiosity and excitement. Autumn Michaelis, mother of five, author of the cookbook, Whole Food for Your Family and the voice behind the blog, Whole Food for 7, shares a sweet story of pure magic in the kitchen.
Autumn Michaelis:
I brought my 10-year-old into the kitchen. He was nine at the time. And I decided I was going to teach him how to make mayo, which might sound abstract, but there's just some fun science behind it, and I knew he was going to get a kick out of it.
And so if you've never made mayo before, it's very simple. My recipe has four ingredients, but it's got a [inaudible 00:01:10], which is the tricky part, turn the thin liquid into a thicker spreadable sauce. I do so with an immersion blender. And so I brought my 9-year-old into the kitchen. I told him we were going to do some kitchen magic and showed him how to do it. It's a pretty simple, straightforward process. And as it changed from thin oil into the thick white mayo, his eyes lit up and he said, "Mom, is this a Harry Potter wand?" Convinced we had just done some sorcery to turn this into mayo, he was so excited. And I love the magic that kids find in things, and realizing that can happen in the kitchen was just a cool moment for us. And so now he fondly refers to my immersion blender as his Harry Potter wand, and I am not going to correct him anytime soon.
